Abstract: I will discuss the mechanisms behind action prediction and social perception in infancy. The aim is to demonstrate that multiple mechanisms (in particular statistical learning and motor simulation) guide our ability to make sense of others. The speed with which a new social perception skill is learned depend heavily on the exact task at hand (covert shifts of attention/action prediction/action evaluation) and the amount of time available for a particular process (few hundred milliseconds or several seconds).
