"How semantic representations are coded in the brain: the examples of numbers and words".
Abstract:
We live our lives surrounded by symbols (e.g., road signs, logos, spoken and written words and numbers). Early during development we learn how to interpret them and throughout our life we use them to evoke, communicate and reflect upon things that are not currently present to our senses.
The representations that we access when we process known symbols is what we call semantic representations. One current challenge in cognitive neuroscience is to understand the structure and the neural substrates of semantic representations.
In my talk I will start illustrating how we have approached the question to investigate the neurocognitive representations of numbers, and subsequently present novel data on the semantic representations of words referring to concrete objets.
